Anna Mitchell and Band and Shane Joyce

Thu 20 Dec
9:00 pm
€€12

Anna Mitchell’s released her self titled second album in January 2018.

‘Anna Mitchell’, the album, intertwines fragility and power, it is a record made with confidence, intuition and empathy, assuredly alternating between sparse, atmospheric grooves and slightly gnarled, expansively lovely distorted grungy folk, rock.

The album was recorded independently in Cork, Ireland under the watchful eye of engineer and co producer Brendan Fennessy (O Emperor) along with a band of well known Irish musicians including drummer Davie Ryan (Jack O’ Rourke, Notify), Brian Hassett on bass (John Blek & The Rats, Mick Flannery) and Alan Comerford on guitar (O Emperor, Mick Flannery).

The initial blustery rock ‘n’ roll impact only adds to the albums spectrum with the seasoned band capable of swooning and swaying throughout dreamlike soundscapes and hypnotic grooves.

The album’s tone varies from the back room bar brawl of ‘Get Out’ to the hypnotic ‘Never Learn’, taking in the blues rock of ‘Dog track’ and the epic ‘Better Life’, demonstrating a confidence in the performer and songwriter. You might also hear echoes of; Pj Harvey, Sharon Van Etten, Portishead, The Posies, Fleetwood Mac, Lana Del Ray. Angel Olsen , Lucinda Williams, The Felice Brothers, Hurray For The Riff Raff.

This is an album that Anna has decided to self title, has chosen to put her name to. It’s something that’s private but comfortable enough to be shared, a personal celebration.

SHANE JOYCE

At an early age, Shane Joyce was influenced by the great songsmiths Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen and the ninety-mile-an-hour writings of beat poets Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg.

At fifteen, he picked up his first guitar… an old nylon string, and soon after the songs started to tumble out of him.

And they have been coming ever since.

Though still strongly influenced by those folk and beat heroes of his past, in recent years, Shane has been able to gain new influence from a multitude of other facets of writing, so that everything from Hemingway to T. S. Eliot to more recent luminaries such as Phosphorescent,Fionn Regan and Laura Marling may muscle their way into Shane's work.

His musical career began by busking on the streets of Kilkenny city, where he was picked up one dreary winters day by bass player Brian McGrath.

Brian had been looking for a singer for his new band and soon Americana/folk group ‘The Midnight Union Band’ was formed. With the band Shane continues to tour and put out records.

To date Shane has toured Ireland, the UK, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland and also supported Irish favourite's Mick Flannery and Brian Deady.

In Jan 2018, Hotpress Magazine announced Shane as one of their "one's to watch for 2018"
